About Sigiriya
Sigiriya, the iconic Lion Rock, is one of Sri Lanka's most dramatic and iconic landmarks. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is an ancient rock fortress and palace built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century AD. Rising nearly 200 meters above the surrounding jungle, the summit once held a royal palace with gardens, pools, and fortifications. The ascent features the famous frescoes of the Sigiriya Maidens — ancient paintings of extraordinary beauty. Halfway up, the enormous Lion Gate (from which the rock gets its name) greets visitors. At the base, the beautifully landscaped water gardens are among the oldest in the world.
