About Polonnaruwa
Polonnaruwa served as the second capital of Sri Lanka after the destruction of Anuradhapura. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is considered one of the best-preserved ancient cities in South Asia. The ruins showcase the grandeur of a 12th-century kingdom with its Royal Palace complex, the stunning Gal Vihara with four magnificent Buddha statues carved from a single granite rock face, and the circular relic house Vatadage. The ancient city also demonstrates the engineering brilliance of the Sinhalese civilization through its sophisticated irrigation systems, including the massive Parakrama Samudra reservoir.
